A little About me
Hi, I’m Pat Canavan—a musician, composer, filmmaker, and lifelong explorer of sound, story, and the art of bringing creative people together.
My Story (So Far)
Music found me early, and it was love at first listen. Someone handed me a Beatles record when I was four, and I haven’t looked back since. I taught myself guitar and ukulele, picked up the bass, dabbled in piano, and eventually explored everything from timpani to tubular bells, xylophone, and vibes. If it made a sound, I wanted in.
One of my first real bands, U4EA (with Blair Waddell and Steve Charleton), had the good fortune of scoring a couple of Top 20 hits on Canadian radio. Needing music videos for those songs, I accidentally became a film producer—borrowing money from “very legitimate” Russian businessmen and teaming up with Glenn Forbes as our director. That was my first foray into film, and it set off a chain reaction.
The Isumataq Chapter
Through that journey, I met the remarkable painter Ken Kirkby. I introduced Ken to Glenn, and also brought in Gary Lalonde from Honeymoon Suite. Together, we created the rock album Isumataq—a fusion of music and art inspired by Ken’s monumental painting.
Our collaboration took on a life of its own. We toured the Isumataq show with Ken’s art opening in front of the House of Commons, then hit the Museum of Natural History in Ottawa, the New York Art Festival at the Jacob Javits Centre (1992), and finally spent the summer of 1993 at the Isumataq Pavilion at Ontario Place. Looking back, those shows were as much about connection and community as they were about music and art.
I later had the chance to score two of Glenn Forbes’ films, Amplifier and Masterpiece Monday—projects that blended visual storytelling with music, and each picked up a few awards along the way.
Collaboration & Ongoing Projects
I’m lucky to keep working with an incredible team. Dave Skrabec is my go-to guitar solo guy—he always finds the perfect spark. Bill Scholte isn’t just a gifted lyricist; he’s a bassist who brings serious groove and heart. Jim Zolis is the engineer I trust with nearly every album; he just gets it.
Together, we’ve worked on albums like HERE, 600, and the recent track “Breathe in Life Again.” Every collaboration brings new energy, and I’m grateful for every creative partnership.
My Visual World
My journey isn’t just about music. I’ve directed, produced, and scored dozens of video projects for clients like Canadian Tire, Jumpstart Charities, Sears, and Variety Village. I’m especially proud of my indie film Stump the Guru and my YouTube channel, PatCanMusicChan, which is home to a wild mix of music videos, creative experiments, and behind-the-scenes moments.
I’ve also created and produced web series like 90Second Chef and Confessions of a Rock’n’Roll Cameraman with Tony Wannamaker—diving into some of the best untold stories from the music world.
Giving Back
I believe in the power of music to bring people together. I founded the Music In Community (MIC) initiative to help adults facing mental health and cognitive challenges find joy through music. Teaching songwriting at Durham College keeps me inspired and connected with new ideas and talent.
TheGratitude.show
My latest project, TheGratitude.show, blends original music and visual art into short moments of reflection and gratitude—a reminder for myself (and anyone else tuning in) that there’s always something to appreciate, whether it’s a melody, a memory, or a moment of laughter.
Still Playing, Still Learning
Whether I’m scoring a film, jamming with friends, producing videos, or writing songs, I’m always chasing the next story. My music’s found a home on Apple Music and Spotify, but the best moments are still the ones where something I’ve made connects with someone else.
Thanks for stopping by. If you’ve read this far, I hope we get to share some music, a story, or a bit of gratitude together sometime soon.
